5-hour Japanese workshop for travellers

  Fee:  $65  for 5-hour workshop

  Upcoming workshop: Sunday 16 May 2010 from 1:30pm - 6:30pm

  • This workshop is for travellers or visitors who will visit Japan in the next 3 months, who want to have a very basic level of Japanese language to ask very simple questions and to have some understanding about the country.

  • It is designed for those who do not have time to come to class for 10 consecutive weeks or who just want to have a brief knowledge about the language and culture.

  •  The workshop is 5 hours, which is on the second Sunday of every two months. In the workshop, you will be taught some basic survival Japanese expressions, some cultural dos and donts, some basic tips to bargain, survive and handle the traffic. The workhop also provide some travel tips to help travellers to Japan. 

  • The workshop participants also watch a short version of Japanese movie about getting around, buying fruits and crossing the roads in Japan.

  • You can prepare any questions you have about travelling to Japan and we will try our best to inform you.

  • We will also hand out the training materials to you, but you can also bing along your Lonely Planet Guide in Japanese (if you have) on the day. You can also bring a small recorder to record the pronunciation if you would like to do it.

Who should take this course?

The level would suit a traveller or a complete beginner who has no prior knowledge of the language. The student will start on all the basic fluency and proficiency skills : speaking, reading, listening and writing . The course aims provide the student with enough vocabulary and basic grammatical rules to communicate with confidence in simple real life situations.

For learners who have no knowledge of the language and want to begin a course of study to be able to communicate with a Japanese speaker/partner or friend.

Expected Outcomes:

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • pronounce all the sounds and tones in Japanese

  • recognise the tones when listening to a Japanese word.

  • say hello, goodbye, thank you and greetings

  • tell and listen to the time

  • say numbers, weeks, months and years

  • order food at a restaurant

  • ask a receptionist at a hotel

  • asking for direction

  • get a taxi or buying a train ticket

  • bargain in Japanese currency

Who should join this class?

Learners who have finished 20 hours of Japanese Beginner 1.

Learners understand simple Japanese characters and can write simple Japanes words. 

Learners should have the ability to understand simple sentences and make simple conversations

Learners can ask and answer about name, nationality, time, simple direction and days during a week. They can also say sorry, thank you, greeting and good bye.

Learners want to learn more verbs, noun, vocabulary and improve in sentence structure and fluency.

  • Free access and use of Japanese materials (books, CDs, video, tapes) and newspaper at the school library ANYTIME DURING THE SCHOOL OPENING HOURS.

   Japanese for the HSC

The HSC course provides complete preparation for the HSC in Japanese and covers the skills and knowledge required in the Stage 6 syllabus for the HSC examination.

We use all assessment tasks supported by the board of studies and past HSC exam papers including listening CDs in our lessons to intensively support students to prepare for HSC exams.

We are also in regular contact with high school teachers, which allows us to keep up to date with any changes in curricula and have a source of valuable and current teaching materials.

   Preparation for The 41st Japanese Language Speech Contest

Course Duration:    3 hours

Course Fee:          $ 60 (for class of 3 student) or $45 per hour for one-to one coaching

Upcoming class:     Saturday 21 August 2010 from 3pm to 5pm

This course provides a solid preparation for the Japanese Speech Contest. 

Through the course the participants will improve their skills to write a good speech in Japanese and present it in a fluent and confident manner. 

Those who are not intending to participate in the contest, but would like to be a good speaker of Japanese are also encouraged to enrol. 

The aim of the contest is to encourage learners who are studying Japanese to showcase their Language skills in a challenging context

All contestants will receive a participation certificate. Prizes will be awarded in each division.

The NSW state Japanese Speech Contest will be held on Saturday 18th September at the Macquarie Japanese Studies Centre at Macquarie University.

The winners of the NSW contest will proceed to the National Final on Saturday 16th October. 

The speech contest (State/National) is conducted under the following divisions.

Divisions:

1. High School Senior Division

2. Open Beginner Division

3. Open Division

4. Background Speaker Division

Subject of Speech:

The subject, content and form of the speeches are left open to each contestant. Entrants who

have competed in previous contests may not use the same speech (this includes title andcontent) presented in previous years.

Length of Speech (Time Limit):

High School Senior Division: 2.5 - 3 minutes

Open Beginner Division: 2.5 - 3 minutes

Open Division: 4.5 - 5 minutes

Background Speaker Division 4.5 - 5 minutes
